Illinois Supreme Court upholds state gun and magazine ban

CHICAGO, Ill. (WJPF) – In a four-to-three decision, the Illinois Supreme Court sided Friday with the Pritzker administration in upholding the Protect Illinois Communities Act.

The lawsuit, filed by Republican state representative Dan Caulkins and other gun-owners, claimed that the law violates the U.S. Constitution’s Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.  They also claimed the law was applied unequally.

The Protect Illinois Communities Act bans the future sale of dozens of specific brands or types of rifles and handguns, .50-caliber guns, attachments and rapid-firing devices.  Those who already own these types of firearms will be able to keep them, but now must register them with the Illinois State Police.
