“Nuisance” night club site of weekend shooting

CARTERVILLE, Ill. (WJPF) – One person is recovering after they were shot at an unlicensed nightclub in Williamson County.

It happened around 3:40 a.m. Saturday at the former Club 262 in Carterville, located at 10032 Samuel Road.  Over 30 rounds fired from multiple guns, hitting one man in the chest. He was taken to a St. Louis hospital.  Multiple buildings and cars were also damaged by the gunfire.

Williamson County Jeff Diederich says the shooting Saturday is just the latest criminal activity at that location.  Over the past two years, Diederich says deputies have been dispatched to the night club over 40 times, including 5 calls of shots fired.  Other calls were for large crowds, noise complaints, fights, and unlicensed liquor sales.

“There has been an ongoing problem at this location,” said Sheriff Deiderich in a Wednesday press release.  “While I certainly support local business I cannot turn a blind eye to the threat to public safety that is occurring.  I would be remiss not to classify this establishment as a “nuisance.”

Sheriff Diederich says this is an ongoing investigation and criminal charges are anticipated.
