Virtual rallies, line spacing: Illinois votes amid pandemic

CHICAGO (AP) — Presidential hopefuls Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders were rallying voters from afar and election workers are set to distribute hand sanitizer at polling places as Illinois’ primary gets underway amid a global pandemic.

Biden is hoping to expand his lead over Sanders as Illinois votes Tuesday. Also on the ballot are primaries for Congress including a rematch between Democratic Rep. Dan Lipinski and progressive Marie Newman for a Chicago-area seat. Races for the Legislature, Cook County state’s attorney and judges also are on the ballot.

Officials declined to postpone the election despite concerns about low turnout during the COVID-19 outbreak.
