State Board of Elections: Very likely Russians were behind 2016 data breach

Illinois Board of Elections officials say Friday’s federal indictment shows it’s very likely the state’s 2016 data breach was tied to Russian hackers.

The indictment cites an unnamed board of elections that was targeted by Russian intelligence officers.  Elections spokesman Matt Dietrich says it’s very likely that the feds are referring to Illinois. He says they have suspected the Russians were behind the attackers.

Dietrich says since the breach, the board performs frequent cyber security checks and is using federal funding to make sure local election authorities are secure as well.
