CIL-FM Artist of the Week – Wiz Khalifa

It took seven years, but Wiz Khalifa has released a follow up to one of his best received projects of his career: Rolling Papers 2.

Khalifa’s music was first discovered back in 2004 when Rostrum Records president Benjy Grinberg heard his music on a mixtape featuring numerous up-and-coming Pittsburgh rappers.

In 2007, Khalifa signed to Warner Bros. Records and released two mixtapes through Rostrum Records.  He saw success even from the beginning, when his debut single “Say Yeah” reached top 25 on the rhythmic and rap charts.

He would continue to gain momentum over the next couple years thanks to some guest spots on tracks with Rick Ross and Curren$y.  It wasn’t until 2010 when Khalifa would reach mainstream success with “Black and Yellow”.

Since that moment, Wiz Khalifa has remained in the mainstream putting out successful albums and mixtapes, dating, marrying and divorcing model Amber Rose, and even starring in a film.  Amongst all this success, it is hard to imagine that Khalifa is still only 30 years old.

Khalifa still has plenty of time to continue his mainstream status and with another effort like Rolling Papers 2, fans can continue to enjoy whatever he does in the future.
