Ten digit dialing for local calls begins Sunday

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WJPF) — Beginning Sunday you’ll have to dial the area code for all local calls.

The FCC says the longer number are necessary for two reasons: more numbers than people and the implementation next year of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. The lifeline will be able to be accessed by dialing 988, a local exchange used in southern Illinois and 35 other states.

Local calls made without dialing 618 first may not go through.
