The Old King Coal Festival is returning to West Frankfort May 7th through the 10th, celebrating its 85th year.
This year’s theme, “Forged in Coal, United in Freedom,” highlights the region’s mining history with a patriotic touch ahead of America’s 250th anniversary.
The four-day festival will feature carnival rides, food, live music, and traditions like the Coal Miners Memorial Service and the Grand Parade.
This year’s Old King Coal is John Gossett, a third-generation miner and former Illinois State Police officer.
Organizers say more details on this year’s event will be released soon.
