Illinois State Police say they’re stepping up efforts to fight vehicle theft and carjackings across the state, using grant funding from the Illinois Secretary of State’s vehicle theft prevention council.
State police have received more than 10-million dollars to support these operations.
From October through December of 2025, ISP says those missions helped recover 243 stolen or hijacked vehicles, led to 24 arrests, and resulted in the seizure of five firearms.
One of the latest cases happened December 22nd, when an Audi connected to an armed carjacking was found in Carbondale. Police say the vehicle was abandoned in a field, and two people were taken into custody.
ISP says the operations are aimed at reducing vehicle-related crime and improving public safety statewide.
