MOUNT VERNON, Ill. (WJPF) – Two people are dead, five more are recovering from gunshot wounds after a shooting early Sunday morning in Mount Vernon.
Authorities say between 100 and 150 people had gathered near the intersection of South 15th and Lamar Streets when shots were fired around 1:00 a.m.
Zomarrius Williams, 20, of Mt. Vernon, and Demonta Woodward, 26, of Mounds, died of their injuries.
As of Monday morning, Jerria Smith, 22, of Mt. Vernon, has been the only person arrested. She’s facing charges of reckless discharge of a firearm and obstruction of justice. Mount Vernon Police say despite the large crowd and number of witnesses, few are talking to police about what happened.
The department is asking people living in the area with home surveillance to review the footage and report to police anything that could be helpful to the investigation.
