A Brief History of WCIL-FM

WCIL-FM (101.5 CIL-FM) has been a defining voice in Southern Illinois broadcasting for more than 50 years, serving the Marion–Carbondale region with today’s hit music and a strong connection to the local community. Originally signing on in 1968 and later establishing itself as a full-time FM powerhouse in the mid-1970s, the station quickly rose to prominence as “Rockin’ Radio CIL-FM.” Known for its energetic on-air personalities, high-profile promotions, and deep involvement across Southern Illinois, CIL-FM became a staple for generations of listeners and a consistent leader in local radio.

Today, CIL-FM continues that legacy as part of the River Radio group under Max Media, blending contemporary hit music with a modern, community-first approach to broadcasting. From supporting local events and schools to maintaining strong ties with Southern Illinois University athletics, the station remains one of the most recognizable and trusted media brands in the region. As it celebrates 50 years of hit music, WCIL-FM stands as a testament to the enduring power of local radio and its ability to evolve while staying rooted in the community it serves.
