Eldorado Joins Growing List of Towns Restricting Kratom

Eldorado city leaders have approved a new ordinance banning the sale and delivery of kratom within city limits. Officials say the move is aimed at protecting public health and safety.

Kratom is a plant native to Southeast Asia that contains compounds with both stimulant and opioid-like effects. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has warned that kratom use may lead to addiction, seizures, liver damage, and even death.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institute on Drug Abuse have also reported rising emergency room visits linked to kratom use, while the Drug Enforcement Administration has identified its active compounds as having a risk for abuse.
