Drug Exposure at Pinckneyville Correctional Center Adds To Growing Concern

Six inmates at Pinckneyville Correctional Center were treated over the weekend after a suspected drug exposure, according to Illinois lawmakers who say this is part of a growing problem inside state prisons.

State Senator Terri Bryant says incidents like this are becoming more frequent—along with staff assaults and rising violence across multiple facilities.

Bryant claims the Department of Corrections did not notify lawmakers about the latest exposure. Instead, she says a staff member reached out, telling them these exposures happen “every day,” and that the warden has allegedly instructed staff not to even write them up because there are so many.

No staff members were hurt in the Pinckneyville incident, but Bryant says it raises serious questions about how drugs continue to enter Illinois prisons.
