Illinois Senator Dick Durbin is breaking with many Democrats — voting with Republicans to advance a plan to end the record-long federal government shutdown.
Durbin says the bill isn’t perfect but would restore food benefits and bring back laid-off federal workers.
Governor JB Pritzker and Senator Tammy Duckworth opposed the move, saying Democrats should keep fighting for health-care subsidies under the Affordable Care Act.
Durbin’s vote marks the second time this year he’s clashed with top Illinois Democrats over government funding.
