West Frankfort Teachers File intent to Strike

After months of contract negotiations, West Frankfort teachers will officially file an intent to strike Today.

The West Frankfort Federation of Teachers — Local 817 — voted overwhelmingly yesterday afternoon to authorize a strike. Out of 114 members, 103 cast ballots, and all 103 voted in favor.

Filing an intent to strike starts a 10-business-day countdown before district employees could legally walk out.

Union leaders say the results send a clear message — that educators are united as talks with the district continue.

Local 817 plans to file the official notice of intent to strike with the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board on Thursday, followed by a public statement.

Union officials say the vote reflects their determination to reach what they call a fair and respectful contract.
