Man steals 5 vehicle in two week period

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Ill. (WJPF) – A De Soto man has been arrested in connection to string of five vehicle thefts within a two week period.

According to the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office, the 10 day crime spree began on April 29 when Wesley New, 24, stole a vehicle in Colp.  The sheriff’s office says New drove the stole vehicle to White Ash, abandoned it, and then stole another vehicle.  He was arrested a few hours later behind the wheel of the second stolen vehicle and taken to jail.

Sheriff Jeff Diederich says due to the SAFE-T Act, Wesley New was granted re-trial release on April 30.

On May 9, the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office says New struck again.  Deputies responded to a theft at a home in Carbondale.  The homeowner reported a pickup truck, a jeep, tools, and other items had been taken.   Both vehicles were recovered later in the day; the jeep was found nearby the home, the pickup truck was found in Jefferson County.  Police say Wesley New drove the stolen truck to Belle Rive, where he abandoned outside a home.  He’s then accused of stealing a motorcycle from a home in Belle Rive.

Wesley New was found in the early morning hours of May 10 sleeping in the Cambria Park. The stolen motorcycle was also recovered.

Wesley New was taken to the Williamson County Jail on multiple felony charges. He was denied pre-trail release. Court record show New was also charged with stealing a vehicle earlier this year.
