SIU Women’s Basketball signs 6’4 center Mia Gaines out of Chicago

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois University women’s basketball head coach Kelly Bond-White has announced the signing of Mia Gaines as the first signee of the 2024 recruiting class.

Gaines is a 6’4 center out of Chicago, Ill.

“The foundation of a large 2024 class caught my attention with her work effort and hunger for the game,” Bond-White said. “When I see a young person hop on a train, then bus, and walk to get a training session in, it speaks volumes. That’s the throwback hunger in a post player I’m looking for. Mia hasn’t even scratched the surface of where her game is going. A physical presence, that can initiate the break off a block shot, run the floor with our guards, and finish at the rim. Her upside is endless.”

The Chicago native goes to Hyde Park Academy and played for IL-Chicago Hoops Express 17 Navy BSSL at the AAU level. Gaines is strong in terms of rebounding and around the rim, and is expected to provide production on both ends of the court.

Gaines committed to Southern Illinois while she was on a home visit in September with both Bond-White and assistant coach Marissa Webb. Once she gets to SIU, Gaines is intending on studying business and fashion design.

“I chose SIU because I was truly happy to have a coach and staff that believes in my potential,” Gaines said. “It reminds me of what I have here in Chicago at Hyde Park. After spending time getting to know the coaches and all the school has to offer, it was the obvious choice. I’m so excited to study Fashion and Business as well as grow as an athlete in the Saluki WBB program. When we met with Coach Bond-White, my mom instantly felt the connection was right too. SIU is where I’m supposed to be.”

“Her Hyde Park High School coaches and Chicago Hoops Express AAU coaches have done a tremendous job of putting her in positions to continue getting better,” Bond-White said. “We are excited to welcome the entire family.”
