Physical altercation between Granite City & Cahokia leads to forfeit victories for Carbondale & Centralia

Both Carbondale and Centralia will be without a varsity contest this Friday night after receiving forfeit victories from their opponents.  Granite City, who was set to play Centralia in Week 4 of the season, was the first to announce on Tuesday that they are forfeiting their game this week “due to suspensions issued to the football program.”  Cahokia followed up later in the day with a similar message.

Granite City and Cahokia were in the fourth quarter of their game when a late hit led multiple players from both teams to leave their benches and enter the field of play.  Game officials ejected all players who had left their benches, whether they were involved in the physical altercation or not.

The ejections resulted in neither school having enough players to continue the game.  Additionally, IHSA rules dictate any player who is ejected from a game must sit out the next contest at that level.

Carbondale improves to 2-2 on their schedule.  Centralia records their first victory of the 2023 season; they are now 1-3.  The Terriers and Orphans meet in Week 5 of the season in Carbondale.
