Mineral Area College hires controversial Greg Heiar to lead program

Saturday, Mineral Area College men’s basketball announced the hire of recently fired and disgraced coach Greg Heiar.  Mineral Area is a team that is often on John A. Logan’s nonconference schedule.

Heiar most recently coached at New Mexico State where his contract was terminated for cause on February 14th this year after hazing incidents involving multiple players resulted in the cancelation of the rest of New Mexico State’s season.

Additionally, one of New Mexico State’s players allegedly shot and a killed a student in self-defense last November and a gun was reportedly found by police in the hotel room of an assistant coach after the incident.

Heiar’s contract at Mineral Area College is for one year and $50,000.

Heiar was the head coach of Northwest Florida State College for one season in 2022 when they won the NJCAA National Tournament.
