Four arrested after Carbondale shooting

CARBONDALE, Ill. (WJPF) — Four people are behind bars after exchanging gunfire from their vehicles in Carbondale.

According to Carbondale Police, officers responded to a report of shots fired just before 2:00 a.m. Sunday in the 300 block of East Walnut Street. About that same time, a Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputy driving through the area saw a vehicle speed away. After a short pursuit, three suspects were arrested in the 300 block of East James and Thelma Walker.

Malik Wright, 25, was charged with Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Aggravated Fleeing to Elude, and several other lesser charges. Two juveniles in the car were charged with Aggravated Unlawful Use of Weapons, Aggravated Discharge of Weapons and Possession of Firearms without a FOID.

An occupant of the second car, JaJuan Smith, 22, received a non-life threatening gunshot wound. After being treated at a local hospital, he was arrested and charged with Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Aggravated Discharge of a Weapon and Reckless Discharge of a Weapon.
