SIU Carbondale extends spring break, cancels in-person classes over COVID-19 concerns

CARBONDALE, Ill. (WJPF) — SIU-Carbondale will extend spring break and suspend in-person classes over concerns about the spread of COVID-19.

Spring break, currently underway, has been extended through Sunday, March 22.

Effective Monday, March 23, classes will be offered online or through “other alternative formats” until further notice.

No cases of COVID-19 have been identified on the Carbondale Campus.

University operations, including teaching and research, will continue and staff will report to work as normal.

Future on and off campus events will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, but the school warns many, if not all, may be cancelled.

SIU joins the University of Illinois, DePaul, Northwestern, and Illinois State in calling off classes.
