Carbondale elementary school goes into lockdown after violent home invasion

CARBONDALE, Ill. (WJPF) – A Carbondale elementary school was briefly placed in a precautionary lockdown Wednesday while police searched for a suspect connected to a violent home invasion.

Carbondale Police say at about 1:00 p.m. officers were dispatched to a home in the 600 block of East Searing Street after a call to 9-1-1 stating that a teenager, armed with a gun, had broken into the home and demanded money from the occupant inside. Police say the victim and suspect knew each other.

During the robbery, police say the teen hit the victim with the gun. They declined from first responders treatment of their injuries.

The suspect was seen running south in the general direction of Thomas Elementary School. Due to the violent nature of the crime, police advised school administrators to put into place a temporary lockdown, which was later lifted after the suspect was spotted traveling further away from the school.

Carbondale Police say their investigation is active and ongoing.
