Authorities hopeful new technology will help solve Jefferson County cold case

Jane Doe | Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office

INA, Ill. (WJPF) – A new effort is being made to solve a Jefferson County cold case.

In January of 1993 a decapitated head was found in Wayne Fitzgerrell State Park. Authorities estimate the victim was a woman  between 30 and 50 years old. She had fair skin and long reddish hair. The victim had extensive dental work, including a silver point filling, and she had possibly worn braces at some point. Authorities also say the victim had skeletal asymmetry that, in life, may have been visible in her facial features. Additionally, she may have experienced issues with her neck.

For nearly 30 years, the identity of this Jane Doe has gone unsolved, but new technology is giving investigators new hope.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office says anthropological re-analysis, DNA extraction and sequencing, and forensic genealogy have all led to new images of what the victim may have looked like. The Sheriff’s Office is now circulating these images in hopes of reaching someone with new information.

Anyone with information about this female’s identification and/or this investigation please contact Detective Captain Bobby Wallace at the Sheriff’s Office (618) 244-8004 or Crimestoppers at (618) 242-TIPS (8477).
