Woodlawn woman killed when floodwater carries vehicle off road

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ill. (WJPF) — A Woodlawn woman was killed when her car was swept off the road early Saturday morning by floodwaters.

The body of Shelby Mitchell, a 25-year-old school teacher, was found Sunday.

Authorities say Mitchell’s vehicle encountered floodwaters on Panzier Lane, just south of Route 15. The search and rescue effort was slowed by dangerous conditions created by the floodwater.

An autopsy on the body has been scheduled.
