Murphysboro files lawsuit against U.P.R.R. over North 23rd Street

The City of Murphysboro has filed a lawsuit against the Union Pacific Railroad over a city street that they both claim to own.

Union Pacific claims that residents are trespassing when they use North 23rd Street to access their homes and property and is demanding residents to agree to a lease of nearly $90 month to use the road.

Murphysboro Mayor Will Stephens says that the city has maintained the road for over 15 years with money from the city’s motor fuel tax funds.

The case is scheduled to go before a judge until late October.
