Illinois pork farmers worried about effects of proposed Chinese tariffs

Talk of Chinese tariffs is not just part of some global economic conversation or the latest Tweet from the president. Illinois hog farmers say a proposed 25 percent tariff on American pork will hurt them.

On average, an Illinois farmer will make 20 dollars on 150 dollar hog at market.

A 25 percent Chinese tariff on that same hog would be 37 bucks.

Illinois is the fourth largest pork producer in the country. And China is one of the biggest buyers of all of Illinois’ farm products including corn and soybeans.
