On death penalty reinstatement, Rauner expands definition of law enforcement officers

Those convicted of killing Department of Corrections officers would be subject to the death penalty, according to Governor Bruce Rauner.

On Monday, Rauner issued an amendatory veto of gun reform legislation, tacking on a narrow reinstatement of the death penalty, at the time saying convicted mass murderers and people convicted “beyond all doubt” of killing a low enforcement official could face execution by the state.

Thursday morning, the governor expanded the definition of law enforcement to include Department of Corrections employees. In an interview with Newsradio WJPF, Rauner was asked if law enforcement officers included DOC employees, Rauner answered “Yes. The answer is yes. Anyone who is a law enforcement officer, the answer is yes.”

The amendatory veto now goes back to the House where lawmakers have to approve the changes for it to become law.
