Two convicted on Medicaid Fraud charges

Two Southern Illinois women have been convicted and sentenced for Medicaid Fraud.

According to State Police, and the State Attorney General’s Office, Jeanie Akamanti, of Carbondale, turned in fraudulent time sheets to the Department of Human Services that claimed she had received home health care from several personal assistants.

An investigation revealed that most of those assistants had not provided care to Akamanti and that money had been deposited into her bank account.

Rene Cook, of Murphysboro, was a personal assistant. Investigators say she falsely claimed to have provided services to Akamanti.

Akamanti pleaded guilty to one count of vendor fraud. She was sentenced to four years’ probation and ordered to pay roughly $72,000 in restitution.

Cook pleaded guilty to one count of theft. She was sentenced to two years’ probation, 30 hours of community service, and ordered to pay roughly $2,000 in restitution.
